Westside announces Matt Weir as 2025 recipient of coveted Gavin Webb Award

Westside’s CEO Brendan Madden was onsite in Moura to present the Gavin Webb Award to this year’s recipient, Matt Weir, Gas Plant Operator.

“Matt consistently demonstrates strong ownership, professionalism and a deep commitment to doing the right thing — particularly when it comes to safety and risk management,” said Mr Madden.

“Over the past year, Matt has played a key role in supporting critical controller upgrades across site.

“He approached these upgrades with a disciplined risk management mindset, ensuring work was thoroughly planned, hazards were clearly understood, and operational impacts were carefully managed.

“His attention to detail and willingness to challenge and clarify where needed materially reduced risk during execution,” he said.

Mr Madden said the recipient of the Gavin Webb award must demonstrate outstanding safety leadership and professionalism in their role.

“Matt takes his responsibility as a Permit Issuer seriously — ensuring scopes are clearly defined, isolations are robust, and controls are genuinely understood by those performing the work.

“He consistently reinforces the importance of quality risk assessments and will pause and reset if something doesn’t feel right,” he said.

“During periods of high workload and major maintenance activity, Matt has gone above and beyond to support both operations and maintenance teams.

“He brings a calm, solutions-focused approach and leads by example, contributing to safe, steady and predictable performance across site.

“While many people onsite could have been deserving given the outstanding collective effort this year, Matt’s sustained contribution, safety leadership and ownership mindset made him a standout choice,” said Mr Madden.

The Gavin Webb Award

Named in honour of Gavin Webb, a highly respected colleague whose commitment to safety, professionalism and doing the right thing left a lasting impact on our organisation. Gavin sadly passed away from Motor Neurone Disease, and this award exists to recognise individuals who embody the standards and values he consistently demonstrated — integrity, accountability, and an unwavering focus on safety.
